There is only one African country in the ranking of the most populous countries in 2023, but, according to Statista, in the next century the African continent is expected to account for the majority of global population growth.
Five African countries, namely Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Egypt, are predicted to be among the ten most populous countries in 2100, Statista said, citing the latest United Nations projections.
Nigeria, with a population of 546 million, is expected to rank third behind India and China. The Democratic Republic of Congo will complete the top five with 432 million people, according to the statistics portal.
The United States is predicted to be the sixth most populous country in 2100, with 394 million people, followed by Ethiopia with 324 million, according to Statista.
The ranking of the 10 most populous countries of the next century is completed by Tanzania (245 million people) and Egypt (205 million).
As for the world's current demographic situation, in April India overtook China as the world's most populous country. The US completes the top three. Nigeria is ranked 6th, the only African country that appears in the 2023 ranking.
