According to the UN, its goal is to "help Africa help itself" through fostering the establishment of democratic institutions, mediating conflicts and promoting peace between nations. Sputnik delved into how effective UN peacekeeping in Africa really is.
With many African states troubled by conflicts and their harsh humanitarian and economic fallout, the UN declares among its goals the promotion and protection of human rights through a presence on the ground, supporting economic and social progress.
