Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially commissioned the third phase of the District Water Supply Project in Adaklu-Waya, Volta Region.
The $12.5 million water system, consisting of five phases, aims to provide clean water to 95 local
communities and benefit approximately 89,000 people in Adaklu, Aortime-Ziope, Ho-West, North-Tongu, and Central Tongu Districts in the Volta Region.
Implemented by Strabag AG of Austria, the project was initiated in November 2020 to address groundwater challenges faced by the beneficiary communities. The fourth phase is expected to commence soon and will focus on addressing water scarcity in parts of Central Tongu, Agortime-Ziope and Ho-West districts.
During the inauguration ceremony, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the government's
commitment to fulfilling the basic needs of Ghanaians, including access to quality water.
"We are also committed to ensuring that we practice safe sanitation and hygiene by the year 2030, in line with the attainment of the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," the Ghanaian leader said.
He also urged communities to protect the water system to ensure its longevity, noting that several water projects have been completed in 11 of the country's 16 regions.
Akufo-Addo highlighted the ongoing water supply
projects in Bawjiase and Amasaman, as well as the Sogakope-Keta Water supply project, which is expected to be completed in November 2024 and benefit over 422,000 residents.
"That Project seeks to expand access to and ensure sustainable services in 36 rural and small towns/communities in the Ho, Ho West, Agotime-Ziope and South Dayi Districts. Outstanding works are expected to be completed by March next year," the president said.
