Kenya takes first place on the list of the world's top TikTok users, with South Africa in third place, according to a recently published survey from Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2023.
This report demonstrates that Kenyans use TikTok predominantly for any purpose (54%), but less for news (29%). Thailand came in second, while South Africa completes the top three with 50% for general use and 22% for news, according to Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2023 survey.
In addition, Facebook* is seen to be ceding its traditional position to TikTok as the topmost social network in the field of news distribution, especially among the youth.
However, those who prefer TikTok, Instagram* and Snapchat tend to focus more on celebrities and social media influencers for the latest news rather than media companies, according to the survey.
The report also shows that there is a tendency among users to avoid stories that they find are extremely upsetting or disturbing.
TikTok continues to be the fastest-growing social network which is extremely popular among 18-24 year olds, with 44% of the audience preferring to use it.
