Paris Confirms Macron's Intention to Attend BRICS Summit in South Africa
15:38 20.06.2023 (Updated: 15:25 03.08.2023) Details are emerging about Emmanuel Macron's possible attendance at the BRICS summit in South Africa. If last week Emmanuel Macron's participation in the BRICS summit in South Africa seemed surprising, today his attendance is the subject of open discussion.
During a visit to Pretoria, the French foreign minister acknowledged that the president would indeed like to be invited to the August meeting in Johannesburg. Catherine Colonna confirmed that the subject was on the negotiating table with her South African counterpart
Naledi Pandor.
"We didn't talk about it today, but we did on May 26" around the time of the Paris meeting, the head of French diplomacy said on June 19.
Advocating dialogue, Colonna stressed, however, that this was "a decision that only the countries concerned can take – to the possibility of continuing this dialogue, why not at the BRICS summit or in another format."
"The president of the republic may consider it if an invitation is extended to him", she argued.
For South Africa's Foreign Minister, Naledi Pandor, this project is conceivable.
"If it were to happen, it would be an innovation within the current BRICS participation model, but it could amplify the global reach of the BRICS forum," she said, pointing out that the power of invitation was in the hands of Cyril Ramaphosa, who will host the summit in late August.
The South African President will be in Paris at the end of the week, for the summit for a new financial pact scheduled for June 22 and 23.
What does Moscow have to say?
Russia, for its part, has invited France to clarify the situation regarding the possible participation of its President in the BRICS summit, who would then become the first Western statesman to attend.
The Russian diplomatic spokeswoman asked Paris to explain where this sudden desire comes from.
"Either they want to establish some kind of contact again to show Paris's activity, or this is some kind of Troyan horse, let them say so themselves," Maria Zakharova told Sputnik.
The French side insists that Emmanuel Macron's hypothetical participation "can only take place in full compliance with international law". This is despite the fact that Vladimir Putin's visit is not currently a settled issue due to an arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in connection with the Ukrainian conflict. Moscow, for its part, has repeatedly characterized the court's decision as wrong and noted that it has no legal power in Russia, which is not party to the ICC.
As South Africa is a member of this international organization, the Russian President should theoretically be arrested on its territory.
