In February this year, Russian Ambassador to Egypt, Georgy Borisenko stated that the African nation had expressed a desire to join the BRICS bloc. The diplomat noted that Russia supported Egypt's request and will be happy when it can become a full member of the group.
Russian Ambassador in Cairo Georgy Borisenko confirmed that Egypt had applied to join BRICS.

"Egypt has applied to join the BRICS group, because one of the endeavors that the BRICS is engaged in now is the maximum transfer of trade to alternative currencies, whether national currencies or the creation of some kind of joint currency. Egypt is very interested in this," the diplomat told Russian media.

According to him, Egypt is very eager to develop trade and other types of economic cooperation with Russia.

"Now there is a process of building new mechanisms of mutual settlements in these trade operations," the ambassador also stated.

Later, in an interview with Sputnik, the ambassador saud that Russia supports Egypt's application to join BRICS.
"Russia immediately supported the application of Egypt to join the BRICS. It can take place after the criteria and procedures for admission of new countries are finally agreed within the association, since the current members have different opinions on this matter," Borisenko said.
Earlier in June, the BRICS foreign ministers held a meeting in South African city of Cape Town, with a separate event under the umbrella of the BRICS Friends group being held on 2 June.
The latter was attended by the foreign ministers of 12 countries of the Global South.
