Somalian security forces have eliminated all the militants who broke into a coastal hotel in Mogadishu and barricaded themselves inside the premises, taking the guests hostage, local media reported.According to the police, the siege resulted in a number of deaths.Witnesses reported hearing gunfire and explosions at the hotel on Lido beach.Earlier, local press reported that three al-Shabaab fighters were in the hotel. 12:01 10.06.2023 (Updated: 12:04 10.06.2023) Militants waged a deadly attack in the Pearl Hotel, located in the ever-busy Lido beach, on the outskirts of the Somali capital on Friday. The al-Qaeda*-linked al-Shabaab* militant group claimed responsibility for the attack.
Somalian security forces have eliminated all the militants who broke into a coastal hotel in Mogadishu and barricaded themselves inside the premises, taking the guests hostage, local media reported.
According to the police, the siege resulted in a number of deaths.
"Six civilians were martyred in the attack... and 10 others were wounded. Three brave members of the security forces were martyred," the Somali Police Force said in a statement, adding that 84 people were rescued from the premises.
Witnesses reported hearing gunfire and explosions at the hotel on Lido beach.
"As soon as the first blast rocked the area, I saw a lady fall on the ground, dead, after she'd been hit by shrapnel from the explosion," an eyewitness told the media.
Earlier, local press reported that three al-Shabaab fighters were in the hotel. Three other suicide bombers blew themselves up while trying to enter the premises.
Hotels have often been
targeted by militants in the past as they tend to host high-ranking Somali and foreign officials.
In August 2020, al-Shabaab launched a large-scale attack on the Elite, another hotel at Lido beach, killing ten civilians and a police officer.
Two years later, militants laid siege to the Hayat Hotel in the capital and held it for 30 hours, killing 21 people and wounding 117.
After the Hayat attack, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud
launched an "all-out war" against al-Shabaab, calling on Somalis to help get rid of members of the jihadist group, which he called "bedbugs."
The radical Islamist group al-Shabaab (Young Mujahideen Movement), which operates in Somalia, maintains close ties with the international terrorist organization al-Qaeda.
It carries out armed struggle against the central government of Somalia and impedes the humanitarian activities of the UN.
