Dutch archaeologists were reportedly banned from excavating at the Saqqara necropolis near Cairo, home to Egypt's oldest pyramid, the pyramid of Djoser. Before the controversial exhibition, the museum had been carrying out annual excavations there for more than 50 years.
Egyptian officials have banished a team of the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities (RMO) from carrying out excavations following an exhibition at the museum linking ancient Egyptian figures to modern US artists, Western media reported.
The prominent exhibition at the RMO, titled "Kemet. Egypt in Hip Hop, jazz, soul & funk," depicted American pop stars Beyonce and Rihanna as Queen Nefertiti, cast American rapper Nas as Tutankhamun, and actor Eddie Murphy as Ramesses.
The head of foreign missions of the Egyptian Antiquities Service, in a message to the museum about the ban, reportedly called the exhibition a "falsification of history" with an "Afrocentric" approach.
The museum also told the media that it had received "racist or offensive" comments via social media after the exposition opened.

"Why does the Netherlands even have an exhibit called “Kemet: Egypt in Hip Hop, Jazz, Soul & Funk”? Bizarro world. Good job to Egypt for reprimanding these propagandists & historical revisionists," one netizen wrote.

The museum called Egypt's arguments "unfounded" and expressed disappointment at the ban, adding that the aim of the exhibition was to "show and understand the depiction of ancient Egypt and the messages in music by black artists."

"The Egyptian authorities have every right to terminate a permit for an excavation; after all, it is their land and their heritage. However, the museum considers the underlying argument for this decision incorrect," the museum stated.

This is not the first time Egypt has objected to depictions of its ancient ancestors. Recently, Egyptian authorities criticized the Netflix series Queen Cleopatra, in which the Ptolemaic ruler of Egypt was portrayed as a black woman.

Tens of thousands of people joined a petition in April protesting the choice of a black actress to depict the ancient Egyptian queen, arguing that the show promotes "Afrocentrism."
