The BRICS group unites the world's largest developing economies — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Recently, the association saw heightened interest from a growing number of states in joining the club, most of which are nations of the Global South.
China backs "like-minded" partners joining BRICS, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning has said at a press conference.
"In principle, China always holds that BRICS is open and inclusive. We support BRICS expansion and welcome more like-minded partners to join the BRICS family," she said.
According to Mao, BRICS is an important platform for cooperation between emerging markets and developing states that is committed to upholding multilateralism, vigorously promoting the reform of the global governance and financial systems, increasing the representation and influence of the developing world on the international stage.

"It [BRICS] has become a positive, stable and constructive force in international affairs," Mao stated.

The official commented on the recent statements made by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who earlier this week expressed his country's desire to join the group. He explained this decision by saying that BRICS is becoming a big magnet for those who advocate for a new world order based on peace and cooperation. Maduro emphasized that his nation wants to take part in the construction of the new global architecture and global policy led by BRICS.

Venezuela's Desire to Join BRICS Shows Growing Authority of Association, Moscow Says
During the BRICS ministerial meeting held in Cape Town on June 1, one of the most important topics was the discussion of the association's expansion, the composition of which has not changed since 2010. Apart from Venezuela, a number of other countries seek to join the economic bloc, including Argentina, Iran, Indonesia, Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated that BRICS is moving forward, showing its strength and importance as the center of a new multipolar world order. He commented on the issue of the group's expansion, noting that there are several very strong candidates for joining the BRICS. However, he stressed that Moscow upholds to its unshakable position that there should be no states in BRICS that have joined the illegal policy of unilateral sanctions applied against Russia and other states.
