Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki arrived in Moscow on May 30 on a four-day visit to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Sputnik Africa had the opportunity to sit down with the Eritrean leader to discuss prospects for cooperation between the two nations in an emerging multipolar world, as well as issues on the international agenda.
Eritrea and Russia are committed to enhance cooperation in various spheres of mutual interest and together apply in practice ideas of multipolarity as the world enters a new phase of international relations, said Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki in an exclusive interview with Sputnik Africa.

"Now we are entering a new phase, a new global order. And we are determined to work together to see what the future looks like and cooperate in all fields so that our bilateral relationships within a multilateral context will move forward to promote a new world order," the president stated.

Afwerki recalled that the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Eritrea dates back to the times when his country officially gained independence from Ethiopia. This year, on May 24, the two nations celebrated 30 years of diplomatic ties.
The president explained that during these 30 years, the world, as well as Eritrea and Russia, went through many changes. He outlined major stages of the world order, including the end of the bipolar system with the USSR and US dominating global relations, the transition to unipolar ideas and ideologies, and then the gradual emergence of multipolarity.

"During these 30 years we've gone through a very long history. The end of the Cold War, the 90s, and then the last 30 years [...]. The diplomatic relationship between the two sovereign nations went through this process and is very unique in many ways," he said, adding: "We believe we have learned a lesson from the last 30 years of diplomatic relationships."

He noted that in the context of a rapidly-evolving world and global politics, the relationship between the two countries has also experienced some changes and acquired "unique" features. He likewise emphasized that the two nations are willing to see what the future holds for them in terms of the development of mutually-beneficial relations in the new global order.
In January, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Eritrea as part of his tour to African countries. Lavrov held talks with the Eritrean president, during which they discussed various issues in the areas of economy, mining, information and communication technologies, and agriculture.
Afwerki commented on the visit, stating that the discussions were "very fruitful" and highlighting that the partnership between Russia and Eritrea goes beyond a mere bilateral dimension. In this regard, he underlined, the nations should "promote a broader multilateral relationship."
"We had a very fruitful discussion on cultivating partnership for the long term, and we had to go through evaluating the experience of the last years, 30 years," Afwerki said.
According to the president, it is important to advance cooperation programs and together overcome global challenges. In particular, he referred to the Russian Federation, which is facing challenges from "hegemonistic forces."
He further elaborated that the bilateral relations between the two states should be based on a common and shared understanding on where and "how the world is moving."
Afwerki added that the discussions with the foreign minister, as well as other recent meetings between the countries' top officials, became the basis "for designing, jointly, a program for the future."

Afwerki arrived in Moscow to participate in talks with his Russian counterpart President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday. During this visit, Afwerki, accompanied by a delegation of politicians, laid flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow.
At the bilateral meeting, which took place later on Wednesday, the leaders discussed cooperation between Russia and Eritrea, as well as topical issues on the regional and international agenda.
The Eritrean president reiterated that the world order is on the verge of a radical transformation, in which "Russia could play its part." The Russian president, in turn, stated that there are "good prospects" for Russia and Eritrea to cooperate in various fields, noting that the countries are actively developing ties in the cultural and social spheres.
