Over 30,000 Tonnes of Russian Fertilizers Arrive in Kenya
17:46 29.05.2023 (Updated: 18:22 29.05.2023) Previously, in early March, Russian company Uralchem-Uralkali Group provided Malawi with 20,000 tons of complex fertilizer amid the global food crisis, which has hit developing countries particularly hard.
Uralchem-Uralkali Group's consignment of 34,000 tonnes of fertilizers for Kenya
is being unloaded at the country’s port of Mombasa, the Russian fertilizer producer has announced in a press release.
Comprising potash, urea, and NPKS, the donation is part of a series of shipments of fertilizers from warehouses and ports in the EU to developing countries facing food insecurity. It is the second consignment of the kind, with the first involving delivery of 20,000 tons of fertilizers to Malawi in March.
"Mineral fertilizers are vital for global food security. The disruptions in international supply of crop nutrients that we all witnessed lately have severely increased the risks of famine in many parts of the planet and put hundreds of millions of people at the brink of starvation. As one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of mineral fertilizers, we understand our exceptional role and responsibility in securing food supply to those who need it," said Dmitry Konyaev, CEO of Uralchem.
The United Nations' World Food Programme (WFP) facilitated both shipments of Uralchem's fertilizers by chartering vessels to transport the goods. The firm, in its turn, covered other delivery costs such as sea freight.
Uralchem-Uralkali said that it is "
committed to donating a total of approximately 300,000 tons of mineral fertilizers to developing nations to alleviate the ongoing unprecedented global food crisis." The company underlined that its contribution is in support of efforts to meet UN Sustainable Development Goal #2 – "End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture."
"We also believe that today’s alarming global hunger crisis can only be alleviated by urgent and collective action on all levels. We look forward to seeing Kenyan farmers putting the donated fertilisers to good use and reaping a fruitful harvest," Konyaev concluded.
