Great Opportunity to 'Synchronize Watches': Lavrov Greets His Kenyan Hosts
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has arrived on a working visit to Kenya's capital of Nairobi to meet with the country's leadership. This is the top diplomat's first trip to the country since 2010.
Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov addressed the Kenyan parliament with a greeting speech. He noted that 2023 is a special year, as in December, Russia and Kenya celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations.
"I think this is the right occasion to come to Kenya for a visit," Lavrov said.
This means there is a great opportunity to discuss development of bilateral relations, Sergey Lavrov added, announcing talks with President William Ruto, Minister of Foreign Affairs Alfred Mutua, as well as Parliament Speaker Moses Wetangula and his parliamentary team.
The topics of discussion will be cooperation in trade, investment and economic spheres, humanitarian and cultural issues, education, cooperation in the UN, and many other aspects, Lavrov said.
"We are grateful to you for the participation of your parliamentary delegation in the Russia–Africa international parliamentary conference. Let's continue this practice. We are looking forward to the Russia–Africa summit, which will be held in St. Petersburg at the end of July," Russia's FM said.
Kenya is the first destination of Lavrov's new African tour. In January, the minister went to South Africa, Eswatini, Angola and Eritrea, and in February he visited Mali, Mauritania and Sudan.
