China Slams Report Alleging Hacking Into Kenyan Gov't Systems Calling It 'Sheer Nonsense'
16:00 25.05.2023 (Updated: 10:49 03.08.2023) Earlier this week, the British media reported, citing unnamed sources, that the hacks taking place between 2019 and 2020 were aimed, at least in part, at gaining information on debt owed to Beijing by the East African nation.
The Chinese Embassy in Kenya responded to a media report accusing China of infiltrating Kenyan government systems, calling it "false, baseless, far-fetched and full of nonsense."
In its response
published on the website of the embassy in Kenya, China accused the British media of unprofessionalism and labeling.
"It is a highly sensitive political issue to pin the label of cyber attack to a certain government without solid evidence. The relevant media should adopt a professional and responsible attitude and underscore the importance to have enough evidence when conducting reports, rather than make groundless assumptions and accusations," the statement read.
The embassy added that China "consistently and firmly opposes and combats cyber attacks and cyber theft in all forms," as
hacking poses a threat to China itself.
The Chinese embassy has also vowed to bolster its diplomatic relations with Kenya to benefit both parties in the framework of their comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.
“Whether the cooperation between China and Kenya is good or not, the people of the two countries have the most say. Any attempt to sow discord between China and Kenya is doomed to failure and will only disgrace oneself,” the Chinese embassy stated.
China's foreign ministry said it was "not aware" of any such hacking, while China's embassy in the UK called the accusations "baseless", adding that Beijing opposes and combats "cyberattacks and theft in all their forms."
On Wednesday, the British media published a story titled "Chinese hackers attacked Kenyan government as debt strains grew," according to which, hackers from China struck Kenyan government with a number of digital intrusions into key ministries and government offices.
