Africa Day 2023: Celebrating the African Union's Anniversary

Subscribe
Today Africa is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), recognizing the role and contribution of the founders of the continental organization to the political liberation of Africa.
On this very day, May 25, 1963, 32 heads of independent African states convened in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, along with leaders of African liberation movements, to forge a path toward full African independence, resulting in the creation of Africa’s first post-independence continental institution, the Organization of African Unity (OAU).
In 2002, the OAU was replaced by the African Union, retaining its primary function of uniting and achieving greater cohesion between the African nations.
Our infographic shows the milestones in the expansion of the OAU over time and the main indicators of the AU today
