NATO Directly Involved in Armed Conflict on Side of Ukraine, Kremlin Says
The Storm Shadow is a cruise missile that can travel up to 250 km for the export version and up to 560 km for the domestic model. If launched over northeastern Ukraine, the Anglo-French missile could target major Russian cities such as Kursk, Belgorod, Voronezh, Sevastopol, and much of Belarus, including its capital, Minsk.
The Storm Shadow is the most powerful NATO missile provided to Kiev to date and supersedes the HIMARS rockets that were delivered in large numbers over the past year.
At the same time, it is worth noting that these missiles are compatible with Eurofighter Typhoon, Rafale, Mirage 2000, and Tornado jets, none of which are in Ukraine's possession. The UK and NATO have been hesitant to provide advanced aircraft to Kiev due to concerns that Russia would quickly destroy them.
To operate these missiles, Ukraine's Air Force would have to adapt them to their existing MiG-29 or Su-27 fighters, Su-25 close air support bombers, or Su-24 strike jets.
Recently, Britain's Defense Secretary Ben Wallace declared that the missiles were either already in Ukraine or are on their way. While UK officials have privately guaranteed that Kiev has pledged not to use the missiles to attack targets within Russia, Moscow remains wary, given Ukraine's history of indiscriminate and deliberate targeting of cities in Donbass and attempted missile, artillery, and drone attacks on targets deep inside Russia.
