According to the North African country's defense ministry, the objective of the drills was to train commanders and soldiers in combat operations and test the readiness of crews to perform under various conditions.
Algeria has held two tactical military exercises with live ammunition, 'El Fassl 2023' and 'Azm 2023', which took place on Tuesday and Wednesday. The drills took place at the Hammaguir test polygon, within the country's 3rd Military Region, simulating a response to an attack on Algeria using a scenario where a foreign army launches an invasion.
The tactical exercises were supervised by Lieutenant General Said Chanegriha, Chief of Staff of the People's National Army (ANP), during field visits to the 3rd Military Region, according to a statement by the Algerian Ministry of Defense.
"The stated objectives of the exercises are to train commanders and staff in the preparation and organization of combat operations, to give commanders experience in commanding units by achieving harmony, coordination and cooperation among subunits, to enable crews to acquire more skills in controlling weapon systems, and to test operational readiness and the ability to successfully perform the assigned tasks under various conditions," the statement read.
The three-day war games were led by the 40th Mechanized Infantry Division and supported by combined arms units from various services, armed with Russian-made equipment including S300PMU(X) regiments, Su-30 MKA multirole fighter jets supported by Il-78 planes, Mi-28NE and Mi-171 attack helicopters. Electronic Warfare Regiments employing the Chinese-made CHL-906 system were also present.
Russian-made T-55AMV main battle tanks, BMP-2 Berezhok infantry fighting vehicles and artillery units also took part in the drills.
The ministry said that the exercise "clearly
demonstrates the ability of the participating units to successfully carry out the assigned tasks, especially in the field of good control of crews in various weapons and modern high-tech equipment".
