UN World Food Programme resumes operations in Sudan despite ongoing armed clashes
Despite ongoing armed clashes in Sudan between the country's regular army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the World Food Programme (WFP) has resumed operations to prevent millions of people from going hungry.
The UN agency said on Monday that it would begin distributing food in the coming days in Sudan's Gedaref, Gezira, Kassala and White Nile states.
"We will take the utmost care to ensure the safety of all our staff and partners as we rush to meet the growing needs of the most vulnerable," the statement said.
The World Food Programme was forced to suspend operations in Sudan after three of its employees were killed in clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF. According to UN estimates, even before the outbreak of the armed conflict, more than 15 million Sudanese were facing severe food insecurity, which is expected to increase significantly as fighting continues.
UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths is expected to arrive in Sudan on Tuesday to assess the humanitarian situation in the North African country.

Sudan's Warring Factions Commit to Negotiations for Lasting Ceasefire
Sudan's warring factions have agreed to negotiate a "stable and reliable" ceasefire that both sides can agree to. The talks may take place in Saudi Arabia, according to the United Nations special envoy to the country, Volker Perthes.
While representatives have been named and preliminary discussions have begun, the exact time and place of the negotiations remain unknown, and logistics still need to be worked out.
The UN official noted that he has seen a "change in tone" from both sides, with each acknowledging the danger of the ongoing conflict and the costly nature of any potential victory.
The development comes as the two sides clashed in the Sudanese capital. It comes just days after the extension of a fragile ceasefire was announced. Despite this, both sides have agreed to honor a 72-hour extension of the nominal ceasefire that has been in place for the past week. It is hoped that the negotiations will prevent further violence and begin the process of building a lasting peace.
