Russia is going to resume direct air links with many African countries, and related government bodies are already working on this issue, Vsevolod Tkachenko, director of the Africa Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, told Sputnik. Noting that the resumption of direct flights to African states, including those to which the USSR maintained direct flights, is being discussed, he stated that there are still many issues that should be addressed. In particular, he pointed out the problem of economic feasibility and passenger occupancy rates. He added that the department is working on updating air service agreements with several countries, and on finding new carriers, highlighting that this is complex work that will be continued and will eventually lead to tangible results.Earlier this month, Mauritian Ambassador to Russia Heswar Janke said in an interview with Sputnik that he was counting on the resumption of direct flights from Russia within a few months. In March, Sudanese Ambassador Mohammed Elgazali Eltijani Sirraj also stated that Khartoum would like to resume direct flights to Russia, like during the days of the USSR. Such a decision, the diplomat noted, will have a positive impact on bilateral relations between Sudan and Russia. The same suggestion was made by the Ambassador of Angola in Moscow, Augusto da Silva Cunha, who stated that in 2023, the largest airport in southern Africa will open in Luanda. The airport, according to him, will turn the country into a transport hub for the entire African continent. In January this year, Oleg Ozerov, Ambassador-at-large of the Russian Foreign Ministry, head of the secretariat of the Russia-Africa conference, stated that Russia is going to launch direct flights to South Africa ahead of the second Russia-Africa summit scheduled for July 26-29, 2023.

Russia Set to Resume Direct Flights to African Countries
12:37 15.04.2023 (Updated: 12:42 15.04.2023) Last month, the Russian Federal Agency for Air Transport (Rosaviatsiya) announced plans to launch direct flights to several countries of Southeast Asia and Africa, including Myanmar, South Korea, Tunisia, Algeria, and South Africa.
Russia is going to resume direct air links with many African countries, and related government bodies are already working on this issue, Vsevolod Tkachenko, director of the Africa Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, told Sputnik.
"We are in talks with many countries on the prospects of resuming regular flights," he said, adding: "There are many factors that have to be taken into account, but there is such a task, and work on this is being carried out by all interested departments, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs."
Noting that the resumption of direct flights to African states, including those to which the USSR maintained direct flights, is being discussed, he stated that there are still many issues that should be addressed.
