South Sudan's First Vice President Detained as UN Urges Calm in the Country

South Sudan's First Vice President, Riek Machar, was placed under house arrest in Juba on Wednesday night. In response, the United Nations mission in South Sudan appealed for calm amid escalating tensions throughout the country.

"Following reports tonight of the detention of First Vice President Riek Machar, the UN Mission in South Sudan calls on all parties to exercise restraint and uphold the Revitalized Peace Agreement," Nicholas Haysom said.

Earlier that day, President Salva Kiir Mayardit reiterated his steadfast dedication to achieving peace, emphasizing his determination to prevent the country from slipping back into war.
