Dilma Rousseff announced that she had been re-elected as head of the BRICS New Development Bank.
"I was re-elected; the board approved it unanimously," O Globo newspaper quoted Rousseff as saying.
At the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia proposed extending the presidency of Brazil and the mandate of the bank's president, Rousseff.
Rousseff was involved in leftist political movements opposing Brazil's military dictatorship (1964–1985) during her youth. In 1970, she was arrested for her alleged participation in guerrilla activities against the regime. While in custody, she endured torture, including electric shocks and other forms of physical and psychological abuse. After her release, she continued her activism and eventually transitioned into politics.
