French prosecutors have launched an investigation into energy giant TotalEnergies over allegations of manslaughter and failing to assist people in danger during a jihadist attack in Mozambique, media reported.
"TotalEnergies has been informed of the opening of a judicial investigation into the Mozambique terrorist attacks of March 2021," the company reportedly said on Saturday in an emailed statement. "The Company categorically rejects these accusations."
TotalEnergies reiterated that its Mozambique LNG project teams provided emergency assistance and helped evacuate more than 2,500 people, according to the reports.
The inquiry, reportedly led by prosecutors in Nanterre, near Paris, will determine whether there are sufficient grounds to bring the company to court. Meanwhile, the US Export-Import Bank has approved a $4.7 billion loan for the Mozambique LNG project, clearing a major step toward restarting operations that were halted due to the attack, according to Bloomberg's report on Friday.
