The SWAPO party at its sixth extraordinary congress on Saturday elected Namibia’s President-elect, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, as the party’s president, filling the position that became vacant following the passing of President Hage Geingob in February 2024.
Geingob’s term was set to end in 2027.

“Thank you, comrades. I stand before you, proud and deeply honored to accept the trust you placed in me to complete the term of our late President Hage Geingob. As human beings, we are not in charge of what is happening around us. This extraordinary congress could have taken place at any other time and place after the position became vacant, but events were just taking place until it was pushed to March 8, International Women's Day,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said.

Her announcement as the party’s first female president, she said, will strengthen gender equality in Namibia.

“Not just for the sake of gender equality, but for the prosperity of our people. Ours is not to balance. Ours is the quality that we are bringing to the table. Therefore, it is a moment of joy, and I can say Namibia will go down in history, particularly the SWAPO party, for having celebrated 08 March 2025 in a special style, that you have delivered on this day the first female president of the SWAPO party,” Nandi-Ndaitwah told delegates.

Her victory, she added, also speaks to the resilience of Namibia’s democracy and strengthens the nation’s diversity and dreams in fighting for equality, justice and opportunity for all voices in the social and economic development area.

“I take this trust with my whole heart. By virtue of having elected me, it means you have also accepted the challenges of selflessness, devoting yourself to the betterment of our party through unity of purpose and service delivery to all our members and all the people of Namibia. By electing me as your president, you are telling me that I have your unwavering support in leading our party. Thank you, comrades. What unites us is greater than what divides,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said.
