The President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco Embalo, has announced that the next presidential elections will be held on November 30.
The president plans to remain in office until a new head of state is inaugurated. The opposition is against this idea and wants him to leave on February 27, 2025, the anniversary of his inauguration. However, the Supreme Court has ruled that his mandate expires on September 4.
The UN and the Economic Community of West African States are deploying a mission to Guinea-Bissau to agree on the optimal calendar for preparing and holding the presidential elections, according to the media.
On September 11, 2024, Embalo said he would not seek re-election when his term expires.
