Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye announced on Saturday that the government will focus on the livestock sector as a key part of its food sovereignty policy.
"Animal production generated nearly 847 billion CFA francs ($1.36 billion) in our country in 2023, demonstrating the vitality of this sub-sector, where significant progress has been achieved thanks to dedicated efforts," he said during the opening ceremony, as cited by media.
He underscored the crucial role of the private sector in keeping domestic products competitive and highlighted the need for a sustainable production system that meets consumer demands.
Furthermore, President Faye introduced key measures to improve the livestock ecosystem, which include securing access to essential resources like animal feed and establishing community agricultural cooperatives. These initiatives aim to retain young people in their communities while tackling unemployment and curbing irregular migration.
On the issue of livestock theft, the head of state instructed the prime minister to quickly work with ministries and other stakeholders to organize a national consultation. The objective is to formulate a coordinated plan that addresses the multifaceted challenge of this problem.
Additionally, the president noted that the government will focus on diversifying production chains and called for a comprehensive strategy. This strategy should encompass origin certification and promote products branded "Made in Senegal."
