A cholera outbreak in Angola has killed at least 108 people since the start of the year, the country's health ministry said.
Since January 7, Angola has recorded 3,147 confirmed cases of the disease, nearly half in the capital, Luanda, according to the health ministry. Those affected range in age from two to 100, with at least 48 deaths in Luanda and 43 in the neighboring Bengo province.
Cholera is a severe and potentially fatal intestinal infection caused by eating food or drinking water that has been contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae (often from feces). The infection leads to severe diarrhea, vomiting, and muscle cramps. However, severe cases can be effectively treated with oral rehydration and antibiotics.
