What Do We Know About Advanced Russian Yak-130M Aircraft That is Gaining Interest in Africa?

In august 2024, Russia's state-owned defense industry giant Rosoboronexport, together with Russian state-owned defense corporation Rostec and United Aircraft Corporation, presented the modernized Yak-130M combat training aircraft at the Army-2024 Forum to a number of foreign customers and saw interest in it.

Several African countries are considering acquiring the advanced Russian Yak-130M aircraft, prompting Sputnik Africa to examine its benefits and features.
The Yak-130M is a modernized version of the Russian Yakovlev Yak-130 combat training aircraft, which has been in service since 2010. Capable of carrying up to 3 tons of weapons, the Yak-130 is not only used for training pilots but also for combat missions by many importing countries.
The main goal of its modernization was to enhance its combat capabilities and and increase its competitiveness. Thanks to Russian engineers, the Yak-130 has transformed into a light fighter while retaining its training functions.

Major changes:
Compared to its predecessor, the new aircraft can carry a wider array of weaponry, including air-to-air missiles and high-precision air-to-ground weapons with satellite and laser guidance;
The electronic system was completely overhauled to enable pilots to train with all types of missiles and bombs without using combat aircraft;
The engine was also revised, doubling its service life and increasing its thrust by 20%.

BRLS-130R radar;
SOLT-130K optical location station, necessary for intercepting drones and cruise missiles;
President-S130 defense complex, allowing the aircraft to counter attacks;
KSS-130 communication complex.

Earlier, Rosoboronexport CEO said that about 40 Russian combat training aircraft Yak-130M can be sold to Asia-Pacific and African countries.
