All overseas offices of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) have been ordered to shut down, with all staff to be recalled by Friday, CBS News reported, citing sources.
The agency's newly appointed deputy administrator Pete Marocco met with State Department officials on Tuesday and ordered every USAID employee to be withdrawn from their respective countries around the world by Friday, the report said.
Marocco reportedly added that if the State Department refuses to recall the USAID staff, the US military will evacuate them.
US billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who leads the consultative Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), said that US President Trump had agreed to shut down USAID. He referred to the agency as a "criminal organization" that "needs to die."
