Vice President Adem Farah of Ethiopia's ruling party, the Prosperity Party, has emphasized the importance of UNESCO's recent inscription of Xeer Ciise, an oral customary law of the Somali-Issa communities in Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Somalia, as a key step in preserving cultural heritage and fostering regional cooperation.
Speaking on the recognition, Adem underscored that the acknowledgment by UNESCO will ensure the protection and transfer of Xeer Ciise to future generations while accelerating cultural tourism development in the region. He stated that the decision symbolizes the collective identity of humanity and reflects the significant role of Xeer Ciise in promoting integration and justice.
Adem also praised Ethiopia’s efforts in the successful registration process, noting the country’s commitment to cultural preservation and regional unity.
He further highlighted the broader implications of the recognition, particularly its role in enhancing social integration and economic ties.
"The recognition of 'Xeer Ciise' offers a significant benefit not only in preserving cultural heritage for future generations and boosting tourism development but also in enhancing social and economic cooperation between neighboring countries," he wrote on social media.
In addition, Adem noted that Xeer Ciise plays a vital role in promoting justice and resolving disputes within communities, complementing formal legal systems by offering fair and equitable solutions.
On his social media account, Adem expressed his "profound respect and gratitude" to all parties involved in the process and reaffirmed Ethiopia’s dedication to preserving and promoting Xeer Ciise as a cultural treasure that contributes to the region's development and unity.
