On Friday, the Sudanese army announced that it had broken the siege on its headquarters in Khartoum. The siege had been imposed by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since the outbreak of war in April 2023.
Troops from Bahri and Omdurman joined forces at the General Command, lifting the siege, the Sudanese army announced, noting that it expelled the RSF from the Jaili oil refinery.
While the RSF hasn't commented, they previously denied losing control of the Signal Corps base, which, along with the General Command, they had encircled since the conflict began in April 2023.
In Port Sudan, now the de facto capital, people celebrated the army's advance, chanting, "One army, one people." Similar celebrations occurred in Omdurman, with cars honking and waving Sudanese flags.
