Last Sunday, local media reported that the explosion had left at least 86 people dead.
"More deaths have been recorded from the fire incident. The latest figure is now 98 deaths, 69 injured, and 20 shops burnt down," Baba-Arah was quoted as saying by Nigerian newspaper Daily Post.
The fire broke out last Saturday after the tanker truck flipped over at a crossroads. Another truck arrived to pump fuel from the damaged vehicle, but locals rushed in to collect the spilled fuel, which is a valuable commodity. The tanker exploded, killing those on site. The fire engulfed nearby cars, motorcycles and shops.
