NATO's outdated training methods is why African countries are rejecting the alliance's presence, Dr. Vladimir Antwi-Danso, dean and director of academic affairs at the Ghana Armed Forces Command & Staff College in Accra, told Sputnik Africa. He noted that NATO's reliance on these methods was recently noted by a captured Ukrainian border guard.
Moreover, NATO is failing in Africa and Ukraine because the alliance "is rude and wants to force their doctrine," the expert noted. NATO's insistence on "democratic norms" during active conflict is seen as insensitive and ineffective when people are suffering, the added.
Antwi-Danso asserted that NATO's reliance on outdated training methods, as noted by a captured Ukrainian border guard, is why African countries are rejecting NATO's presence.
According to the expert, NATO is currently "a little fragile" due to conflicting security priorities between its largest and smallest members.
He noted that African nations are finding alternatives to NATO, increasingly turning to Russia for support.
"The Russians are here in Africa, and they have a different methodology. They are supporting the government. They are fighting. [...] The exploitative nature of the French is not seen with the Russians," he said, adding that the search for alternative security arrangements in Africa will continue "as long as NATO tries to suppress the needs of the people by trying to impose."
Antwi-Danso stated that NATO's struggle to maintain influence in Ukraine creates a risk of fragmentation because its success is not apparent.
"What's holding NATO together today is insipid propaganda," he said. "And when this propaganda falls, the whole world will see that they fall."
The speaker added that failures in Africa and the end of the war in Ukraine will lead to a global rethink of NATO and global security.
