Presidential elections will take place in Gabon on March 22 this year, according to Brice Oligui Nguema, Transitional President of Gabon.
Previously, the military, who seized power in Gabon in a coup, planned to hold presidential elections in August 2025 as a key step in ending the transition period and returning the country to civilian rule.
In Gabon, high-ranking military officers seized power on August 30, 2023, overturning the August 26 presidential election victory of Ali Bongo Ondimba. Subsequently, Brice Oligui Nguema was appointed head of state for a transitional period. A new constitution, adopted in November, does not prohibit Nguema from running for the office.
