Nigeria's Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) announced that, effective January 1, 2025, all applicants for oil licenses and permits must demonstrate a commitment to low-carbon emissions and renewable energy.
The new policy, guided by a newly released Upstream Petroleum Decarbonization Template (UPDT), aligns with Africa's largest oil producer's net-zero emissions target of 2060.
"By this, the commission is deepening its efforts to align the upstream petroleum industry with national priorities and international climate goals while ensuring sustainable value creation from oil and gas resources for Nigeria's energy security and economic development," NUPRC Chief Executive Gbenga Komolafe stated.
Applicants will be required to provide evidence of methane management programs (including leak detection and repair), energy-efficient technologies, and the integration of renewable energy sources into their projects.
