The Zimbabwean government is committed to guaranteeing food security, starting with individual households. President Mnangagwa highlighted this commitment, emphasizing the importance of each family taking responsibility for its own food needs.
"When we speak about food security at household level, we are talking about our own families countrywide taking responsibility to achieve food security at the household level," President Emmerson Mnangagwa said during an interview with local media. "Once that is achieved, then the country is food secure."
Mnangagwa noted that Pfumvudza/Intwasa, a climate-resilient agricultural program, is supporting over 1.6 million vulnerable farmers, aiming to maximize agricultural output and enhance productivity.
The program has prepared at least 6 million plots, and distributed over 40,000 tonnes of fertilizer to ease the burden on farmers during recent dry spells. The initiative, coupled with the installation of boreholes and development of village business units, is contributing to increased access to water and improved livelihoods.
Mnangagwa, a farmer himself, urged citizens to emulate best practices, highlighting the importance of learning from the best in the country and region. The president owns the so-called Pricabe Farm in Kwekwe.
"I have my young brother, Patrick, who is running the farm. I always tell him if you see someone outside the country who is producing better, you must go and find out how they are doing it," he president said. "You must compare yourself with the best in the country and the region."
