Africa's demographic potential is on par with that of India and China, presenting a unique opportunity for global influence. According to the Power Transit Theory, success in international competition hinges on factors like population, economic strength, and political capability—areas where the African Union must focus its efforts to craft policies that unite and propel the continent forward, as stressed by Professor Mariia Gorbunova, Head of the Department of International Economics and Customs Affairs at the Institute of Economics, N.I. Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod, Russia, during an interview with African Currents.
"When you pay attention to the power transit theory, so basically to the theory of competition between great powers, there are three factors that matter: first of all, population, then GDP or production of oil or energy consumption, metal production, then political capability [...]. When you look at the African continent all together, we see that demographic potential is the same as India and China [...]. So, basically, we need political effort by the African Union to be active and to promote the sort of policy that can cover all the African continent," Professor Gorbunova says.
