The death toll from Cyclone Chido in Mozambique rises to 120, with 868 injured, according to the National Institute of Disaster Management, cited by local media.
The hurricane-force winds of up to 260 km/h and rains that hit Mozambique between December 15 and 19 destroyed more than 118,000 homes, 52 hospitals, and 35 churches. Some 687,000 Mozambicans became refugees in the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Nampula, Niassa, Tete, and Sofala.
From Mozambique, the hurricane moved west, affecting Zimbabwe and Malawi. In Malawi, Chido killed 13 people, destroyed numerous buildings, and left 45,000 Malawians homeless, local authorities reported.
Cyclone Chido originated on December 7-8 in the southeastern Indian Ocean. From there it began moving west toward the shores of Africa.
