Cyclone Chido's devastating impact on Mozambique has intensified, with the death toll rising to 73 and 543 injured, according to the country's National Institute of Risk and Disaster Management said Saturday.
The cyclone, which struck Cabo Delgado and Nampula provinces, has caused widespread destruction, displacing thousands and damaging vital infrastructure.
The government has established emergency shelters housing over 1,300 people, with President Filipe Nyusi pledged support for victims.
Damage assessments reveal the cyclone destroyed or severely damaged thousands of homes, healthcare facilities, places of worship, schools, electricity infrastructure, and fishing boats.
The educational impact reportedly extends to 15,429 students and 224 teachers, according to the disaster relief agency.
While humanitarian aid is being provided, further funding is urgently needed to assist an estimated 182,000 affected individuals, according to local authorities. The cyclone has now passed, but high temperatures are expected.
