An archaeological exploration in Egri-Mekel, approximately 7 kilometers southwest of Mendefera, was conducted between December 9 and 18, and led by experts from the East African country's Culture and Sports Commission, according to local media.
Dr. Abraham Zeray, an archaeological expert, reported the discovery of two sets of human remains, along with pottery and assorted ornaments. The burial style suggests the remains predate the arrival of Christianity in Eritrea, although further analysis is needed to precisely determine their age.
The local community's cooperation in reporting the findings to authorities was highlighted as a testament to growing public awareness of the importance of preserving Eritrea's cultural heritage.
Abraham Yohannes, Director General of Culture and Sports in Eretria's Southern Region, praised the participation of local youth and the support provided by the regional administration.
Governor Habteab Tesfatsion echoed this sentiment, calling for intensified efforts in the exploration and preservation of Eritrea's ancient sites.
