Kenya's Ministry of Youth, Creative Economy and Sports said the agreement with Grammy Global Ventures does not include holding the awards ceremony in the country, but rather establishing the organization's headquarters in Kenya.
"The ministry [...] and the Grammy Global Ventures signed an agreement on September 25, 2023, where the two parties collaborated on the establishment of the Africa Academy headquarters or a center in Kenya," the ministry said in a statement.
It added that Nigeria, South Africa, and Rwanda are also bidding to host the organization's headquarters in Africa. According to the ministry, the creation of the Africa Academy or center in Kenya will provide local musicians with opportunities to develop on international platforms.
For the Africa Academy project to be implemented, at least two founding members must contribute an equal amount of $2.5 million. As indicated in the statement, the funds may also be used to host the award ceremony in one of the contributing countries on the continent.
Kenya also plans to host the World Conference on Creative Economy in 2027.
