UN Food and Agriculture Organization Says Suspended Its Field Missions in Syria

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Last week, the International Committee of the Red Cross stated that it has a presence in Syria's major cities, such as Damascus and Aleppo, and that its personnel are prepared to increase their efforts in the country to assist everyone in need, the organization's press service told Sputnik.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has suspended its field missions in Syria and will begin assessing the country's agricultural sector when conditions allow, spokesperson Irina Utkina told RIA Novosti.

"The activities of the field missions have been temporarily suspended until the security situation improves. We will use this period to focus on preparatory activities for upcoming procedures with a wider range of UN representatives to ensure readiness for a coordinated response," Utkina said.

She added that FAO is closely monitoring the security situation and is ready to assess the situation in the agricultural sector as soon as the situation in Syria allows.
Utkina noted that FAO will continue to use its technical expertise to help the people of Syria.
