The General highlighted Ethiopia’s crucial role within ATMIS, demonstrating the country's commitment to regional and international peace and stability.
Brigadier General Abiy Ahmed, leading the Ethiopian Army in ATMIS, confirmed that despite numerous challenges, the army successfully fulfilled its mission. He also expressed gratitude to the administration and people of South West Somalia for their support.
The ceremony was attended by ATMIS officers, local authorities, and various political and community leaders.
ATMIS took over from the African Union Mission to Somalia in April 2022, aiming to shift security responsibilities to Somali national forces by the end of 2024. This transition includes a gradual reduction of troops, enhancing the capabilities of Somali forces, and aiding political stabilization. Additionally, ATMIS is committed to safeguarding civilians and providing humanitarian aid in areas freed from al-Shabaab* control.
