In an interview with Sputnik Africa, Dr. Chitanga Gideon Hlamalani, a geopolitical expert from the University of Johannesburg, shed light on why Western powers continue to underestimate Russia's resilience and influence despite sanctions and external pressures.
He noted that the effectiveness of sanctions has been limited, particularly given Russia’s complex and sophisticated economy.
“Russia has demonstrated a very high level of resilience under conditions of conflict,” he said.
Additionally, Europe’s dependence on Russian gas has meant that sanctions have had reciprocal economic effects, particularly for nations like Germany.
Dr. Hlamalani believes Russia’s steadfastness holds lessons for African countries, particularly in fostering economic independence. The lesson, he says, is clear:
"Where there is a will, there’s a way… This is about national pride, national interests, and geopolitical strategy."
Africa could emulate Russia’s example by enduring short-term sacrifices for long-term sovereignty and stability.
On Russia’s invitation for investors from friendly nations, Dr. Hlamalani views it as a significant opportunity to strengthen South-South cooperation. He highlights that such platforms could not only reduce dependence on Western markets but also foster sustainable development.
"If big companies from African countries… participate, it would be great because that’s a bigger platform for these companies to compete at a global level," he emphasized.
Dr. Hlamalani also critiqued the unipolar global order dominated by the West, arguing that it marginalizes alternative interests. He underscored the importance of fair and mutual engagement, noting that attempts to stifle initiatives like BRICS reflect a "hegemonic" mindset.
Looking ahead, he sees strong potential for deeper partnerships between Russia and Africa, underpinned by historical ties and shared goals.
"The reconnection since the 2000s has been very important in resetting relations and recreating old partnerships," he concluded, urging that cooperation extend beyond elite politics to benefit ordinary citizens.
