On Monday, Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa initiated the construction of a 720MW thermal power plant located in Hwange, in the western part of the country.
The multi-million-dollar project is being developed by Titan Energy (Private) Limited in partnership with state-owned ZESA Holdings. It reflects the government’s commitment to bolstering economic growth in line with Vision 2030 and comes as the country seeks to address power supply challenges caused by reduced generation capacity amid drought at facilities like Kariba Hydro-Power Station, local media reported.
The plant will leverage waste coal from local mines to generate energy, ensuring resource optimization while supporting the country’s growing industrial and domestic energy demands, reports said. With Matabeleland North boasting vast coal reserves, the region continues to attract high-value energy investments, reinforcing its role as a strategic hub for national development.
Titan Energy’s phased approach will initially generate 160MW before scaling to 720MW, with plans for a 200MW solar plant in Phase 2. This diversification aligns with global trends toward renewable energy integration. The partnership with ZESA is also a key outcome of mega-deals secured during President Mnangagwa’s visit to China.
