It is necessary to achieve de-escalation in Mozambique after general elections in the African country, Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said in a statement.
"It is crucial that post-electoral grievances are resolved peacefully through inclusive dialogue and independent judicial processes, consistent with human rights and the rule of law. Violence has no place in electoral processes," Turk said.
According to the report of the UN Human Rights Office, Turk called on police in Mozambique to refrain from using unnecessary force and highlighted the importance of freedom of peaceful assembly, as well as access to information.
The post-election protests in the East African nation resulted in at least 10 deaths, dozens of injuries, and 500 arrests, according to local media citing the Centre for Public Integrity, a Mozambican non-governmental organization monitoring electoral processes.
