The South Africa Border Management Authority has temporarily closed its main border crossing with Mozambique, the Lebombo port of entry, due to escalating protests following the disputed October 9 election in neighboring Mozambique.
The decision was made after reports of vehicle arson on the Mozambican side of the border and a request for refuge from seven Mozambican officials for safety and protection amid the wave of unrest, according to Western media.
The protests, called by presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane, who claims victory despite official results placing him second, have intensified throughout the week.
Mondlane's supporters allege electoral fraud by the ruling Frelimo party and are planning a major march on the capital Maputo on Thursday.
Mozambique's Defense Minister, Cristovao Chume, has warned against attempts to seize power and stated that the military is prepared to intervene.
