The new Mexican government does not intend to change its policy regarding rapprochement with the BRICS group, as the Agreement between the United States, Mexico, and Canada (USMCA) remains a priority, President Claudia Sheinbaum said.
"No, at the moment we are betting on strengthening the T-MEC [USMCA] agreement," Sheinbaum said on Thursday when asked about possible rapprochement with BRICS.
Former Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said in August 2023 that Mexico does not intend to join BRICS. In 2024, the Mexican Foreign Ministry commented on media reports about Mexico's plans to join the bloc, saying that the government had not applied to join BRICS, but was "following the bloc's development with interest due to the economic weight of its member countries and the bilateral trade the country conducts with its members."
On Monday, Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said that the country has decided to formally apply to join BRICS. Herath noted that the decision reflects the country's desire to deepen ties with emerging economies and broaden its multilateral partnerships.
