South Africa's Ramaphosa Intends to Strengthen Ties With Russia at BRICS Summit, Spokesman Says

BRICS is an intergovernmental association created in 2006. Russia assumed the rotating presidency of the bloc on January 1, 2024. The year began with the accession of new members to the association. In addition to Russia, Brazil, India, China, and South Africa, it now includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.

South Africa's presidential spokesman Vincent Magwenya told the media at the briefing that President Cyril Ramaphosa seeks to discuss with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Russia's city of Kazan the cooperation between the two countries.

"Ramaphosa plans to address a range of issues of mutual interest, including the conflict in Ukraine," said Magwenya.

The South African president's spokesman underscored that consolidation of BRICS+ after its recent expansion poses particular interest for South Africa.
The BRICS summit will be held in Russia's Kazan on October 22-24. Earlier, a Russian official said that more than 30 states have confirmed their participation in the BRICS summit, including Bahrain, the UAE, Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, with six international organizations sending their representatives, including United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
