Kenya Reportedly Registers First Mpox Death as 13 Cases Nationwide Confirmed

WHO declared mpox a global public health emergency in August 2024 after an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that spread to neighboring countries. The disease spread to countries in central and eastern Africa.

A total of 13 cases of mpox are confirmed in Kenya; one person died, the national news outlet The Nation reported, citing Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni.
According to the report, about 57 people got infected with mpox.

"The cumulative number of people sensitized on mpox at the POE is 366,838, plans are underway to deploy rapid response teams for comprehensive investigation and contact tracing," Muthoni said, as quoted by Nation.

WHO Registers Over 25,000 Mpox Cases in Africa in 2024
The Kenyan principal secretary underscored that symptomatic treatment of confirmed cases is ongoing. Training materials have been developed to assist those affected, as well as mental health and psychosocial support for those affected.
Earlier, Zimbabwe confirmed two cases of mpox, bringing the total number of African countries reporting the viral disease to 17. The cases were identified in Harare and Mberengwa, Midlands Province, and both individuals are currently being treated in home isolation.
