Space-based technologies are vital for monitoring environmental changes, providing essential data to develop early warning systems and track ecological shifts. South Africa, as part of the Space for Climate Observatory, is leveraging diverse data collections to create innovative solutions and collaborate with other nations on national adaptation strategies to enhance climate sustainability, Humbulani Mudau, CEO of the South African National Space Agency (SANSA), discloses during an interview with African Currents.
"Last year, during the Group on Earth Observation Ministerial Summit, signed and became part of the Space for Climate Observatory, which is a group of space agencies across the globe that are looking at providing tools to study and monitor local climate change impacts by integrating satellite data with other information. So South Africa is actively utilizing multiple datasets to create intelligent solutions for addressing climate change, and we're hoping that we will work with the rest of the African continent to ensure that we do put in place our national adaptation plans as countries in order for us to be climate resilient," Mudau reveals.
