The current president, Filipe Nyusi, is ineligible to run again after serving for two consecutive terms, leaving the country's top job up for grabs.
A dozen presidential candidates have joined the race, with the ruling FRELIMO party candidate Daniel Chapo emerging as a frontrunner. He is being challenged by independent Venancio Mondlane and the leaders of Mozambique's two other largest parties, Ossufo Momade and Lutero Simango.
Voters will also choose who will occupy the 250 seats in the country's unicameral parliament. Here, the left-wing FRELIMO is also expected to secure a majority.
